10 Things I Didn’t Know About Parenting But Have Been Forced To Find Out

Top ten lists – everybody loves them. Everybody writes them. Someone else has probably already written this one. But here, nonetheless, is my modest contribution to the genre:

10 Things I Didn’t Know About Parenting But Have Been Forced To Find Out

  1. Sleep deprivation as a concept and sleep deprivation as an experience are two completely different things.
  2. Projectile poop as a concept and projectile poop as an experience are  also two completely different things.
  3. It is possible to sleep when the baby sleeps. All you need is a cook, a maid, and a catheter.
  4. To a toddler, “no” isn’t so much a word as a mantra.
  5. To a preschooler, “no” isn’t so much a rebuke as a call to arms.
  6. What goes up (the back of the sofa) must come down (with a very loud thunk).
  7. What goes in (one end) must come out (the other) — and some of it doesn’t change a whole lot in between.
  8. Anyone who thinks that children have limited attention spans has never read “Goodnight Moon” 57 times in a row.
  9. Never buy refurbished computer equipment – you really don’t know what’s hiding in that keyboard.
  10. Perfect parenting is not required to raise perfectly awesome children.

What have your kids taught you?

  1. That no matter how annoying it is when they keep singing “something something something with a banjo on my knee”, you probably shouldn’t yell “for god’s sake, I COME FROM ALABAMA” in the middle of the library.

  2. OMG – I couldn’t stop laughing! I haven’t experienced all of them yet as DD is just 1, but 1, 2, 3, and 4 are so true. Number 8 is the one that got me – YES! For two weeks straight that was the only book I could read to DD before bed – I couldn’t even pick up another book without a meltdown 🙂

    1. So much yet to experience – and my oldest is only 3! It’s one heck of a ride, especially when they start walking :). Enjoy!

  3. I wanted to let you know that I nominated you for the Versatile Blog Award because you two are awesome! Click here for more info 🙂 I love your blog!

    1. Thanks Katja! That’s sweet. I am sooo behind on my blog reading (and writing!) it’s not funny, but I’ll try and put a list together!

  4. Sasha I just realized that I have had an outdated url in my reader for ages now. GAH. Finally I am up to date. Your list is oh so true.

    1. Thanks Chantal! And the URL is my bad – I’m the one who keeps moving my blog around :). But I think that the “Rambling Notebook” is here to stay 🙂
